When it comes to designing a home that’s both functional and beautiful, window treatments play a crucial role. In this stunning Boulder, Colorado residence, our designer David Low worked closely with the homeowner and Precision Homes to create a cohesive, high-performance shading solution tailored to each space. From glare reduction to privacy and energy efficiency, every room was thoughtfully considered.
Living Room & Library: Discreet Elegance Meets Design Harmony
The heart of the home features ACR motorized Insolroll Elements coupled roller shades with Grey Translucent fabric. This fabric choice was key in tying together the room’s high-contrast design elements while softening the vibrant library wall. To maintain clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, we collaborated with the builder to integrate ceiling pockets, allowing the shades to disappear completely when not in use. The translucent fabric reduces glare on the TV while preserving the outdoor view—perfect for relaxed, light-filled living.
Dining Room: Consistency Across Spaces
With a semi-open-concept layout, the dining room shares visual space with the living area, separated only by a central fireplace. To maintain design continuity, the same Grey Translucent fabric was used, ensuring a seamless flow between the two rooms.
Home Gym: Performance Meets View
Large windows in the home gym called for a solution that could manage heat without sacrificing the serene view of the pond. David recommended Mojave 3% solar screen shades with a rechargeable battery motor. These shades offer excellent solar performance while maintaining visibility. A black metal fascia over the door shade complements the black hardware on the doors and windows, tying the room’s details together.
Walk-In Closet: Privacy with Style
A tall window in the walk-in closet posed a potential privacy concern. To address this, David selected an Insolroll Roller Shade with Apex Semi-Sheer fabric. This choice provides privacy while still allowing soft light to filter through, enhancing the space without compromising comfort.
Primary Bedroom: Dual Functionality for Day and Night
The homeowner wanted both daytime privacy and the ability to darken the room for restful sleep. Our solution? Dual roller shades. The front shade features Mojave 3% solar screen fabric for daytime privacy and pond views, while the rear blackout shade in Mineral Pyrite fabric ensures complete darkness when needed. The complementary fabric tones enhance the room’s high-contrast design. Larger shades roll into concealed ceiling pockets, while a white fascia headbox over the side door blends seamlessly with the walls.
Primary Bathroom: Balanced Privacy and Design
With four windows flanking the shower, privacy was essential. We installed roller shades using the same Apex Semi-sheer fabric from the closet area to maintain visual consistency. Black fascia headboxes were chosen to match the window frames, creating a balanced and symmetrical look.
What made this project complex?
This project presented a unique set of challenges due to the wide variety of window sizes and configurations throughout the home. Some windows were pre-wired, while others were smaller or positioned above door openings, requiring different motor solutions. David expertly navigated these complexities by selecting a range of motor types—from hard-wired motors housed in concealed ceiling boxes to embedded rechargeable battery motors for narrow windows and doors. His attention to detail ensured a seamless and simplified experience for the homeowner.
Additionally, David was involved early in the construction phase, which allowed him to collaborate closely with the builder. He specified custom headboxes to be integrated into the ceiling structure, enabling the shades on larger windows to be fully recessed and hidden when not in use. This early coordination not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also ensured optimal functionality and a clean, modern finish.
